The new virus COVID-19, which swept almost the whole world, put in jeopardy not only the physical condition of a person, but also moral and cultural development. In order to prevent the spread of the virus, quarantine and self-isolation are introduced in the countries, in some places even more than 10 people’s meetings are banned. This has led many of our favorite events to be canceled.
What events will we not be able to attend because of COVID-19?
The largest sporting event – Euro 2020 – has changed its schedule and will be held in 2021. The fact that the event was postponed for a whole year shocked the fans, but nothing can be done about it. All football players are also at risk of contracting the virus by training and preparing for the championship. This is the biggest crisis that global football has faced lately.
The NBA season has also come under attack. It was canceled just a few minutes before the start, due to the fact that a coronavirus was detected in one player. In order to prevent the spread of the virus, everyone who came into contact with the infected had to be isolated with it – and this is other basketball players. Therefore, there was nothing left but to suspend the season.
Tokyo Olympics has not yet been canceled, but it does not cause positive emotions. Given the speed with which a pandemic spans the world, these actions seem completely reckless. A meeting of such a large number of people can significantly aggravate the situation, so most likely the Olympics will be canceled.
Met Gala’s global cultural event was instantly delayed indefinitely. Due to the unavoidable decision by the Metropolitan Museum to close its doors, About Time, and the opening night gala, will not take place on the date scheduled.
The organizers of the Cannes Film Festival still hope for an improvement in the world and plan to hold the festival in late May. However, looking at how the pandemic is gaining momentum, there are more and more rumors that the Cannes festival will be postponed indefinitely.
One of the first to be hit was the media festival in Austin, Texas. Due to the massive outbreak of the virus, many sponsors such as Apple, Facebook and Google pulled out the festival.
Coachella has already been definitely canceled, but it is known that this will happen in October. All purchased festival tickets remain valid. However, plane tickets need to be changed and purchased for the month of October.
Glastonbury’s 50th-anniversary festival has also been canceled. And even if the world situation improved by the beginning of summer, the organizers would not have time to arrange a place for the festival. To equip the field with all the amenities they need at least three months and thousands of employees – it is absolutely impossible to do this in a month.
The most popular and large-scale song event – Eurovision – which was supposed to take place on the 10th of May in Rotterdam, was also canceled. Although over the past few weeks, the organizers managed to find alternative options for the competition, however, the uncertainty caused by the virus crossed out all attempts. The organizers made a responsible decision to cancel the belly of the festival, as the health of artists, workers, spectators and ordinary residents of the Netherlands would be at risk. And foreign visitors can spread the virus from the festival to their countries.
It is a great pride that Eurovision has united the audience of many countries for 64 years. And it’s very sad that this chain will break. However, we must understand that health and well-being are most important.
